First Blog Post

Why write a photography blog?

I’ll let you know when I remember.

Let’s talk logos instead. I’ve spent hours—real hours—playing with logos. It was easier than dealing with the themes available in WordPress, but I’m not ready to talk about that yet.

So, logos.

Years ago, I went a little crazy watermarking my photos. It didn’t matter what the photo was—I even accidentally watermarked personal photos of my kids. Even then, the watermark was nothing fancy.

Everything was great, I was happy, then one day, I read an interesting article claiming watermarking was stupid and only arrogant people did it. Having a random relative ask why my name was on the photos I posted didn’t help. Embarrassed, I stopped. Who was I to think my photos were good enough to watermark? I mean, really?

Of course, afterwards I read even more opinions: watermarking is useless, watermarking is great for promoting your business, watermarking… Everyone has opinions. And everyone’s opinion is right—and everyone else is wrong.

Sigh.

Yes, I know—logos aren’t the same as watermarks. But the time I’ve spent finding just the right font, the right image, wondering “Should I move that over there?”—it reminds me of all the time I invested in choosing something I later cast aside because of negative opinions.

Why have a logo when I don’t really have a business going yet?

Why not?

It’s fun. And hey—should I use a cat holding a camera as part of my logo?

Maybe I’ll never “take off” as a photographer. Maybe I’ll stay somewhere between hobbyist and professional, never crossing that line.

But I’ll have a great logo.
